Dreams and goals, and Obama's speech

Hi Sònia,

The other day at class we saw the Obama’s speech about dreams and goals related with the school and the marks. This has made me think a lot in the goals I have in my life. Goals are very important in life because when you set your own goals you can focus on these goals and refuse to give up. Sometimes it can be difficult and you have to face challenges but if you are committed to a goal you always keep going and finally you will probably succeed.

Moreover, about my long term goals, the most obvious is to succeed in life and work in a job I like and earning a lot of money. But being more realistic and specific I would like to work in the health career.

However I have set me some short term goals too. One of these goals is more similar to a dream I have had since I was a child that is to do a parachute jump in the sky diving of Empuriabrava and I think it will become true the next year. This is not a difficult goal but I’m trying to save some money to pay it.

In addition, Obama’s speech shocked me a lot because I can’t imagine Mr. Rajoy here making a speech like that to the students. Obama talked about dreams and goal but especially about set our own goals in studies to earn good grades although he also talks about special cases like Michael Jordan who set his aim goal in become a professional basketball player and even though he was cut of his basketball team he kept going and put his best effort to finally meet his goal. So the main idea of the speech is that even the more difficulties you have to meet your goals, whether economic or if people think that you are crazy, you have to commit to your goals and refuse to give up and if you do that probably you will finally succeed.

To sum up I have to say that I agree with Obama’s speech and in my opinion it’s true that you have to keep going and put your best effort to meet your goals. However in this country all is very different and when in United States they encourage students to have their own ideas and to keep going with scholarships, here in Spain they don’t mind this issue and they want students with the same ideas and they encourage students with bad grades with support classes or by rising marks that are too low. It’s true that everybody needs a second opportunity but not everybody uses this second opportunity. I wish this change and finally the effort and the commitment of the people turns useful and that finally everybody truly can write his own destiny.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely
